John Hicks

August/September 2001: Object-Oriented VoiceXML

John Hicks is a co-founder of SpeechBrowser.com, makers of FastStartVoiceXML, the Talking Catalog, and PhoneInExpenses.com. John was a regional Database Specialist for IBM, and has a Masters degree in Writing from Columbia University in New York City. In September SpeechBrowser launches its PhoneInExpenses.com service, which will allow speed-dial from a hotel shuttle, car rental bus, cab, or airport monorail. SpeechBrowser.com's Rita captures everything in seconds and sends the user a neatly typed expense report, or imports data into the user's own money program or company spreadsheet. SpeechBrowser.com even details the cost of calls to the company. John is interested in bringing VoiceXML to offices of any size and budget: agencies, foundations, non-profits, small businesses. He is also interested in using VoiceXML to reach the blind, vision-impaired and disabled communities.

Jeff is a respected industry leader in the fields of voice application networks and VoiceXML technology. He is a frequently invited speaker at leading trade conferences, and is often quoted in press articles focusing on
voice technology. Jeff regularly contributes articles to publications including VoiceXML Review and WirelessDevNet.com, and is currently co-authoring one of the first books on VoiceXML development. Upon joining Tellme in early 2000, Jeff co-conceived, built, and managed the debut of Tellme Studio. Tellme Studio is the world's first and most popular VoiceXML resource suite that now supports a community of over 10,000 developers and 1,000 publicly deployed appliations. Currently, Jeff's team helps define and articulate Tellme's strategic direction for meeting the needs of Enterprise customers, and is responsible for all technical marketing, sales tools, and enterprise pricing structure. Previously during a four year tenure at Microsoft, Jeff led a diverse set of platform and consumer efforts including Microsoft Passport, Microsoft SILK advanced Web server technology, and Microsoft Cinemania. He is a co-inventor of patent pending technologies for distributed Web authentication and key management, and helped drive Microsoft's acquisitions of Hotmail and Firefly Networks. Outside of work, Jeff is a critically acclaimed composer and sound designer for live theatre..

Lionel Lavallee

August/September 2001: Integrating VoiceXML and an Application Server: A VoiceXML Case Study

Lionel Lavallee is an Architect with Hewlett-Packard's Bluestone Middleware Division. He has been designing and implementing enterprise software for over 10 years. Previous to joining Bluestone Software (which was subsequently acquired by Hewlett-Packard), he was Chief Architect at TheMan.com. Lionel holds an Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from UCLA.

Rob Marchand is Director of Products and Services Development for VoiceGenie Technologies Inc. Rob has been with VoiceGenie Technologies since 1999, and has worked in advanced computing and telecommunications since 1985. At VoiceGenie, Rob is responsible for the VoiceGenie Developer Workshop (http://developer.voicegenie.com), and new products and services development. Rob is a member of the VoiceXML Education Committee, and of USENIX and SAGE, and a regular contributor to SANS. VoiceGenie is a Promoter Member of the VoiceXML Forum.

Dr. David Noever

August/September 2001: VoiceXML Experience Report: Flight Tracker Voice Application

Dr. David Noever is Chief Technical Officer/Executive Vice President for Mobular Technologies, Inc. (www.mobular.com). Dr. Noever has been with Mobular for one and a half years. At Mobular, Dr. Noever is responsible for technical development of mobilized data vendor business to voice and wireless platforms.
An Oxford University Rhodes Scholar, Dr. Noever received his doctorate from Oxford University, as a Rhodes Scholar, in theoretical physics and bachelor's degree of science from Princeton University, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Noever spends much of his energies developing VoiceXML search technologies for large data aggregation and navigation via voice recognition and playback.
