September / October 2002
Dear Readers,
This fall has been a very busy time at the VoiceXML Forum! There are a number of new programs and activities in the works, which have demanded a lot of our time and attention. In the near term, you've probably all heard by now that the Forum is hosting another User's Group Meeting in conjunction with SpeechTek in New York City at the end of October. Kurt Kolok, one of our program managers with the VoiceXML Forum/IEEE-ISTO brings us a detailed description of the event. This is a must-attend if you are involved in VoiceXML. Brett McDowell is giving a "State of The Forum" address in which he will present the various programs the Forum is working on, and what to expect in the future. We've also recruited a number of widely known VoiceXML experts to lead various technical sessions in the areas of Conformance, CCXML, SSML, and more.
You may recall back in August taking the VoiceXML Forum's VoiceXML Survey. We've tabulated the results and made an attempt to interpret what you're saying. In this issue, Joni Brennan and I present you the results of this survey. Overall, we were excited with what we've heard and intend to use this data to focus our efforts in serving the VoiceXML community. We also thank those of you who took the time to share your input.
This month, Rob Marchand continues his last First Words column on VoiceXML events. This month Rob presents the concept of tapered prompts in VoiceXML, and also sheds some light on how to accomplish post call processing when a user hangs up on a VoiceXML application.
Matt Oshry has taken a break from his incredibly busy schedule to answer your tough VoiceXML questions. This month Matt plumbs the technical depths of VoiceXML by exposing the facts behind some of the more arcane yet important timing-related issues that you've encountered in your VoiceXML apps. To have your VoiceXML question answered in a future column, drop Matt a note at:
