Loquendo Studio: a VoiceXML developer tools suite

By Claudia Romellini

Introduction

This article deals with the development environment that Loquendo has developed and packaged to support companies developing VoiceXML applications for Loquendo's multi-lingual VoiceXML based voice platforms and technologies.

The focus of the development environment, Loquendo Studio, is on testing, debugging, simulating VoiceXML services and grammars. Moreover a Loquendo Studio add-on, provide specific support for grammar creation through a graphical interface.

The comprehensive suite of tools collected in the Studio environment is the result of the feedback and experience of several years of experience in developing voice application. Important features such as tracking of service versioning, usability of the interface, exact matching with the run-time engine and rapid development and testing has been properly taken into account.

Loquendo Studio is a web-based environment providing six tools with a homogeneous, and simple to use interface:

  • Configuration Module: Supports service parameter configuration, i.e., those parameters to be provided to VoiceXML interpreter (session grammars, fetchaudio, default language,..)
  • VoiceXML Debugger: Allows fast and efficient debugging of static and dynamic VoiceXML code;
  • Grammar Module: Allows syntactic and semantic grammar testing and off-line grammar compiling;
  • Simulation Module: Allows simulating the navigation of a voice service through a simple PC equipped with an audio card. without requiring a phone or the platform.
  • Export Module: For packaging files to be provisioned on the voice platforms (i.e. audio files);

Some of this tools are also available to the VoiceXML developer community through Loquendo Café WEB Site: www.loquendocafe.com This site allows developers to upload and test their own VoiceXML applications and experience them by phone..

Loquendo Studio operating environment

Loquendo Studio environment works both on static and dynamically generated VoiceXML and grammars. It is able to interface via HTTP with any application server hosting VoiceXML applications and their associated grammars.
